Exploring N6300

My cousin who happened to be also my dentist asked me a favor yesterday. I’ve always gave her a helping hand on mobile phones especially if its a symbian phone.

Her new unit now is Nokia 6300, a S40 3G. She get rid of her nokia s60 after getting a virus through mms. I helped her removed the virus but she simply don’t like the idea of mobile viruses. Well, I told her the good news that virus is impossible to her new phone since it is a S40. I didn’t suggested her to buy this unit, but I think she fell in love with its slim feature. I do, my 6630 is too bulky compared to her unit. A FM radio and mp3 player are plus factor to her. I forgot to try the FM Radio. For her, mobile phone is also for entertainment.

All along she always heard me saying “maximize the capability of mobile phone by installing application suited to the user’s needs.” She bought a new 1GB MMC, so, she asked for audio files, themes, games, applications and some eBooks. I made her left her unit to me for 6 hours.

Yup! It took me 6 hours… ripping and converting her favorite 8 CDs to mp3 files, 40 kbit/s… gathering the themes from the net. Its amusing to know that the extension name for 6300 theme is nth. I’m quite new to this kind of format. I’ve converted some eBook java format, gave her some games and application. For the record, I didn’t use PC Suite.

Make Your Dictionary Handy

A dictionary is almost the same with the bible that comes with many pages.  I’m talking about the real dictionary, smaller dictionary means lesser word files. Would a student bring a dictionary at school nowadays? I guess not! So lets make it handy then.

Featuring the latest version of MobiSystem MSDict v4.1, I’ve been using the older version MSDict v4.0 for quite sometime. I’ve just installed the latest version now. Actually, as of the moment, using the latest version, I can’t find what’s new with the new version.  Anyway, I’ve never tried using any other mobile Dictionary before but the feature I like with MSDict is you can send the word meaning via SMS/MMS to your contacts.  On my 6630, click 0 or “zero key”, click “pen key” then navigate your cursor, then click “copy”. Open messaging,  paste it to SMS/MMS, then send. Voila!

For First Time Users:
The MSDict 4.1 application was included with MSDict Professional Dictionary Bundle, together with pdb installer files such as Synonymous, Irregular Verbs, English Pro,  English Phrases, Acronymic and a pdf help file.  You can download the trial version here.

  • After downloading the file, read the MSDictViewer_Series60.pdf first or proceed to next step
  • Transfer the sis files to your phone
  • Install first the MSDict.sis, then the other sis files

Note: The dictionary files are installer files or sis files, it will automatically made the correct destination/folder of files on your memory card.  When transferring these files via bluetooth, make sure that you have set your messaging memory in use to your memory card.  The complete bundle is 6.4mb+.

For those who already have the older version, you can click here for version upgrade.

For those who already have the pdb dictionary files for some reason. The right destination of these pdb files is E:\Documents\MSdict , if you don’t have it, make a subfolder of Documents and name it as MSdict.  You can use FExplorer v1.17 for doing this or your built in file manager. The MSDict will then recognize the pdb files as dictionary files and you will see it already upon opening the MSDict application.

Which s60 Are You?

Sometimes, mobile applications have different versions categorized for different symbian series.  Some got confused on which their mobile phone belong and trying different application version that will work. Does it have to be always a ”trial and error”?

The S60 Platform (formerly Series 60 User Interface) is a software platform for mobile phones that uses Symbian OS. S60 is currently amongst the leading smartphone platforms in the world.

These are a few common features in S60:

  • Devices’ display resolution is originally 176×208. Since 2nd Edition Feature Pack 3, S60 supports multiple resolutions, i.e. Basic (176×208), QVGA (240×320) and Double (352×416). Nokia N90 is the first S60 device that supports higher resolution (352×416). Some devices, however, have non-standard resolutions, like the Siemens SX1, with 176×220. Nokia 5500 has a 208×208 screen resolution.
  • It supports Java (J2ME MIDP 2.0 commonly, but varies from phone to phone.) applications and Symbian C++ applications.
  • Certain buttons are standardized, such as left and right select, Menu, Clear, and Input Settings.

There have been three releases of S60: “Series 60″, “Series 60 Second Edition” and “Series 60 3rd Edition”.

I Fried My Memory Card!

We all know that eBooks comes with huge file sizes… installing and removing eBook files is also a risk to your phone’s memory card.  I’m not saying that this is for eBook file alone but to all files you are putting and removing from your memory card such as applications, games, videos, audios, images and others. Size isn’t always the remedy but large capacity memory cards are a big improvement, except for nokia symbian 60 1st edition system that can’t handle large capacity memory card.

One problem to be aware of – sometimes, but rarely, memory cards do fail and if this should happen to you, think about all the files you will have lost. Its not a pleasant experience.

I still have my old memory card, the one that comes with the mobile phone, its a 64mb MMC. I’ve bought another one with larger capacity. I’m using the old MMC for my back up files (mobile applications and eBooks) so I’m switching from the old one to the new MMC. That was before when I don’t have computer access. Nokia 6630 unit is one of the few units that you can open the MMC slot without turning it off. One time, I was charging my phone (I don’t turned it off while charging) and I noticed that something is wrong with my phone so I need to back up my contacts immediately.  I did forgot that I was charging at that time, I’ve swap the MMC without pulling off the charger! The new MMC didn’t work at all. I just laugh with my stupidity, when I’ve realized my mistake. Imagine, I’ve fried my memory card! Its a good thing that I still have the MMC warranty and claim it without telling the supplier what really happened.

These are the few tips on taking care of memory card: (as far as I remember)

  • Don’t fried them!
  • After several deletion of files, use the compress option using FExplorer
  • Defragment using a memory card reader and computer occasionally
  • If you are using Opera third party browser, always delete cache, cookies and history after using it
  • Back up your files to your computer, to a file host or to your Yahoo briefcase
  • Never remove your memory card while application is running. Close all running application first.
  • If you had formatted your MMC using a card reader, format it again on your mobile phone.

Java Enabled Mobile Phones

Java ME has become a popular option for creating games for cell phones, as they can be emulated on a PC during the development stage and easily uploaded to the phone. Java ME devices implement a profile. The most common of these are the Mobile Information Device Profile aimed at mobile devices, such as cell phones.

I’ve noticed that many eBook readers who want to try java eBook are having second thought if their mobile phone is java enabled phone.  The following devices are java enabled, the list originally comes from mjsoft, I’ve added some latest phones that I know.  If you know other phones that not included here, please let me know so that I could add it here.
