Maintaining A Free File Host

File host offers webspace for our important documents such as images, documents, videos, audios etc. There are many file host sites in the web but some are not accessible to mobile phones (depends on the site and connections). To mobile community, using a file host means sharing our files to others.

During my active moblog days, I have an account at xthost and fsphost. The later closed their site and I lost my files, my xthost accounts are still running until now for so many years. To maintain xthost account, take note of these rules:

- inactive sites will be deleted with less than 1 hit/week
- No adult content allowed!
- Hosting copyrighted/illegal material is not allowed
- no mp3 storage (like 1 mp3 per account…)
- actually you know what’s going on, if you abuse it we will delete your account
- XT Host reserves the right to delete any page it deems unacceptable for any reason without prior notice.
- XT Host makes no guarantee as to the availability of service.

Its not that easy maintaining the account if no single hit (download) a week. There was a time that I have to download a single file from each of the accounts regularly to maintain them. If the first rule is not accomplished, that means account expiration. The trick here is upload an image and use the link in forum, blog or site.

A friend also informed me that my xthost links were posted on other popular wap sites which I’m not aware. If they’re receiving a regular download from those wapsites, I guess I owe them a lot.

Rule of thumb, always read the terms of service when signing up.

Backing Up eBook Files

Last month, I was worried with my ebook files when my computer got infected with Trojan virus. A collection of eBooks for 4 years is precious to me, I even converted some of them. Backing up in a CD and/or a flash disk is a good idea but online backup is much better.

Good thing that I signed up for a free basic account at IDrive with 2GB space. I referred my friends and I have additional 10GB now free of charge. That’s 12GB in all for IDrive Basic. IDrive Pro is $4.95 only a month with 150GB space.

We can never tell when we are going to need our back up files, a trojan virus can only be one of the many reasons why we need a back up.

FSPhost Closed!

Last month, my co-mobile bloggers was asking me if my file host was still active since they are having a hard time downloading files on their mobile phones. I’ve checked it out and still works fine, haven’t noticed any advisory from the login page. I had my account there for 1 year and 2 months, I always made weekly downloads to avoid my account to be cancelled. It wasn’t easy doing such for that period of time. I think that was 2 weeks in a row that I can’t access my files so I went to the main page to login. The page redirect me to fsphost blog.

Fsphost offered free file host service for our files we want to share to our colleagues. I’m sad for its closure last Oct. 30, 2007:

In the past couple months the advertisements could not cover the server costs so we decided to make this step to close fsphost.com. Another reason is the lack of time as this is more a freetime project not our main job .. You will have noticed we are announcing fsphost.com v2 now for over one complete year but it is still not finished.

The FSPHost team is thanking you for using this free service.

No matter how sad I am for losing my files I have my back-up on CD anyway. I want to thank you for great service you offered. You made sharing files easy for us.
